A surge in the Delta variant coupled with low vaccination rates in certain areas of the country contributed to an increase in COVID-19 cases over the July-August 2021 timeframe and a 20-fold increase in orders for COVID-19 monoclonal antibody therapeutics (mAbs) during this period. In response to this increase in demand, the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response transitioned to a State and Territory-coordinated Distribution System for mAbs on September 13, 2021.

On February 9, 2021, the FDA issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for bamlanivimab and etesevimab administered together for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients (12 years of age or older weighing at least 40 kilograms [about 88 pounds]) who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 and who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19.
