PRINCIPLES OF MANAGING PEOPLE AND QUALITY FOR MEDICAL DIRECTORS ON DVD

Principles of Managing People and Quality for Medical Directors on DVD was created at the 2003 CHAMPS/NWRPCA Primary Care Conference as an introduction for the new medical director.  The series includes five disks of presentations and one disk of presentation handouts.  See below for a description of each session and recommendations regarding content that may be outdated and content that is enduring and continues to be useful.

Principles of Managing People and Quality for Medical Directors topics include:

  • Disk 1: The Role of the Medical Director, Tina Castañares, MD; Working with Your Executive Director, Grace Wong, MD
Disk 1 covers some information that continues to be useful and enduring regarding challenges for the medical director and the relationship between the medical director and CEO.
  • Disk 2: Clinical Operations, Vincent Thompson, MD; Provider Privileging, Rick Starrett, MD
These two sessions provide an overview of scheduling, patient flows, staffing, purchasing, support, and privileging.  Many of these practices have been improved over the years and thus some information is outdated.
  • Disk 3: Provider Scheduling, Allyson Roby, MD; Provider Productivity/Compensation, Tom Hunt, MD
Disk 3 contains information on open access and provider productivity during a time when open access was a fairly new concept and many health centers did not have EHRs, thus the information is outdated.
  • Disk 4: Managing People, Malcolm Butler, MD
The content in Disk 4 was presented by a talented speaker who present timeless and enduring information.  This session is still highly recommended as an introduction to managing people.
  • Disk 5: Quality Management, Shaki Matta, MD; Conflict Resolution, Malcolm Butler, MD
Disk 5 contains total quality management principles for the medical director and an excellent presentation on conflict resolution that continues to be useful.
  • Disk 6: Presentation Materials (CD-ROM)

BASICS FOR DENTAL DIRECTORS ON DVD

Basics for Dental Directors on DVD was created at the 2003 CHAMPS/NWRPCA Primary Care Conference as an introduction for the new dental director.  The series includes six disks of presentations and one disk of presentation handouts.  See below for a description of each session and recommendations regarding content that may be outdated and content that is enduring and continues to be useful.

Basics for Dental Directors topics include:

  • Disk 1: Financial Management and Budgeting, Rob Hemmen, CPA
Disk 1 contains some content that is outdated now that dental and medical care in health centers is becoming more integrated, and Medicaid programs have changed from state to state.
  • Disk 2: Provider Compensation, David I Rosenstein, DMD
The information on Disk 2 provides a general overview of how a dental director can start to examine provider compensation; however some of the information is outdated.
  • Disk 3: Pediatric and General Dentistry, John J Rome, DMD
Disk 3 contains good information on how to best treat children.  It provides helpful information on behavior management of children, but may not be essential for dental director functions.
  • Disk 4: A Hiring Model for Dental Auxiliaries, Nancy Rabel and Linda Torres, DDS
This session provides good basic information on a process for hiring a new staff member of any type with practical tips for any new director.
  • Disk 5: Preventive Dentistry: How to Provide Dental Care That Protects Both the Dentist and the Patient, Mark Koday, DDS
Disk 5 presents basic information on quality improvement and assurance in a dental practice; however some information is outdated.
  • Disk 6: Open Access/Same Day Appointment Scheduling, Ginger Carpenter, MSN and Rusty Reese, DDS
This session provides information on open access which was a relatively new concept in 2003.  The information on this disk may be relevant to new directors who are not familiar with open access, but is likely outdated for many dental directors.
  • Disk 7: Presentation Materials (CD-ROM)
