The Inner Critic: Friend, Foe, or Neither?

Dr. Christine Runyan addresses an often overlooked truth: healthcare professionals do not lack resilience. The rigorous training paradigm ensures they have the ability to “bounce back in the face of adversity.” However, needing to be resilient in the face of chronic stress, coupled with a common mindset of perfectionism, allows the voice of self-criticism to flourish. Many clinicians achieve excellence, in part, by repeatedly bowing at the altar of self-criticism and demanding more and better for themselves. This behavior is rewarded throughout training. Once training ends, however, this well-oiled mechanism is extremely hard to turn off simply because the evaluations, feedback, and grading has stopped. The cognitive and behavioral habit loops have been formed and a pernicious negative internalized voice persists. The seeming paradox between imposter syndrome on one hand, and perfectionism or even ego on the other hand, are actually manifestations from the same source. This presentation will focus on learning how to recognize and meet the inner critic for sustained well-being in clinical practice. More information about Dr. Christine Runyan can be found here.

Leveraging Neuroscience and Mindfulness to Maintain Well-Being in the Pandemic (and Beyond)

Dr. Christine Runyan begins this session with the premise that humans do not like uncertainty. The pandemic ignited uncertainty on a multitude of levels, for all of us. In the face of this uncertainty and fear, the very predictable stress response has been chronically activated and unmitigated for humans across the globe. It is this physiological activation that is likely at the root of the burgeoning mental health crisis, increased rates of substance misuse, poor health behaviors, interpersonal violence, and stress-related medical conditions. While the stress response is most often characterized by fight, flight, and freeze phenomena; rarely do we consider individual variability based on prior experiences.  Equally important, we have not been able to collectively leverage the ‘tend-and-befriend’ response that is physiologically intrinsic to humans. This presentation will address both of these concepts, drawing upon neuroscience and mindfulness to understand current levels of distress as well as potent applications of these concepts to enhance well-being. More information about Dr. Christine Runyan can be found here.
